RIO RICO COMMUNITY ALLIANCE
“One Community – Together”
On May 30th the Alliance hosted the launch of the SCVSD "Summer Food" program. The event was sponsored by SODEXO and SODEXO's Food Services General Manager Rachel Carroll. The Alliance and Borderlands Food Bank sponsored a produce redistribution and Marketplace. A free lunch of hotdogs and condiment bar were distributed to over 100 attendees. Free beverages we supplied by the Alliance and Borderlands Food Bank.
The Alliance continues to host the "Summer Food" program from June 1 - July 31. The lunch is free to ages 18 and under. Adults may purchase the lunch for $3.25 with proceeds going to the School District. Lunch is served from 11:00am to NOON. On Wednesdays the Alliance sponsors after lunch programs for the participants. A coloring contest has been launch on June 17th and will run through July 22. Prizes will be awarded during after lunch on Friday, July 31st.
Other events currently scheduled are clay sculpturing, airplane making and bead jewelry. Other events will be offered during the summer school break.
WHO ARE WE
The Rio Rico Community Alliance is a volunteer 501c(3) non-profit corporation formed as a community service organization, with the final goal of creating and supporting a Multipurpose Center for the Community. The Alliance is located at 1279 W. Frontage Road, Unit G, Rio Rico, AZ where the Alliance has leased an 1100 sq. ft. space.
In addition to the Alliance, the Rio Rico Chamber of Commerce has relocated inside the Center. This provides a closer relationship with the Chamber and its business community.
The focal point of the “Center” is to provide a low-cost venue to local organizations and individuals to hold small- to medium-sized meetings and events. The Alliance now has a limited space to hold fundraisers, host speakers, offer classes by local instructors and much more.
Although this location limits available space we now have a location to help the community. This provides a location, not only for our members – but for the whole community.
Our long-term goal is to raise funds to eventually build a Multipurpose Center that will become a permanent part of the Rio Rico Community and neighboring communities.
Funds to support the Alliance are generated from membership dues, donations, space rentals, and fundraising events. Funds are also raised through sales at the Alliance Thrift Store (previously called The Rio Rico Produce Depot) located next to the Alliance Center.
Administration of the Alliance and its funds is managed through a Board of Directors. Monies received are used to benefit the community, either indirectly through a permanent location or directly by disbursements to local charities and social projects.
Recreational opportunities for our young adults are virtually non-existent except for school programs. The Alliance is looking forward to provide activities for our young adults, especially during the summer hours.
This location would immediately be able to provide:
Meeting location for the Rio Rico Historical Society
Free music practice Studio for local student musicians (we have the instruments/electronics etc.)
Social Center for our Community Seniors
Thrift store/food bank and donation center
Gift shop. Featuring local crafters and artisans
Rio Rico Chamber of Commerce
Multipurpose room for events, meetings, classes, student dances, movie night and fundraisers.
ALLIANCE THRIFT STORE:
Having a low-cost donation-sponsored thrift shop in our community is a great value to the community. Currently, residents have to travel out of the area to enjoy low-cost shopping. Additionally, the generosity of our residents will remain in the community rather than being donated to resale and thrift stores outside of the Rio Rico community. This location has the space to receive and store large items as well as general donations.
Access to local food banks is limited. The closest food bank is seven miles away in Nogales. The Alliance Thrift Store is an agent of Borderlands Food Bank . The Store provides a redistribution point for produce “rescued” from local produce shippers by Borderlands. Thrift Shop sales provide additional income to the Alliance in support of the Center.
